The National Stroke Strategy requires that the workforce has demonstrable stroke specific skills and competence to assure delivery of quality stroke services. A regional project undertaken through the South of England Stroke Nurses Forum culminated in the development of concise guides for each band of registered and non-registered nursing posts. These concise guides outline the various role and requirements, mapped to knowledge and skills and provide a framework for collecting evidence. The second phase of the project, funded by the South Central stroke and cardio-vascular network, is implementing and supporting the use of the concise guides in practice and is seeking to extend the project to multi-professional roles including AHP’s such as Physiotherapy and OT.
This innovation links with the Stroke Specific Education Framework, enables organisations to utilise the competencies of their choice and will assist organisations, clinicians, education providers and commissioners in the delivery of Quality Markers 18 and 19.
